Luonnonvarakeskus (Luke) or the Natural Resources Center is a research institute run by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Forestry, which began operations on January 1, 2015. The resource center was formed by combining of different research centers and public bodies of Helsinki. It is the second largest Research Institute in Finland.

Heikki Lehtonen (HL) is a research professor in unit “Economics and Society” of Luke, and a docent of agricultural policy at the Univ. of Helsinki. Farm and agricultural sector level economic modeling results on policy impacts on agricultural production, land use and farm income at different regions in Finland and whole country have been disseminated and discussed with stakeholders of different levels since 17 years. Modifying agricultural management practices to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus leaching has been the focus of my research. I have done experimental work in the field scale (since 1980s), system-level analysis of nutrient cycling in Finnish agriculture (since 2000s) and contributed in formulating science-based agri-environmental schemes and legislation.

I am a soil biologist specialized in the study of earthworm ecology and behavior in arable soils. In Diverfarming I work for the macrofauna part of the work-package 4.

Hannu Fritze

Hannu Fritze is a research professor at the Natural Resources Institute Finland. He is specialized on microbial community structure analyses in forest and peat soils slowly moving also to agricultural soils. Emphasis is paid to the microbial community of the methane cycle and changes in community structure in relation to forest practices. He holds over 150 scientific peer reviewed publications and has an h-index of 55. At the moment he is leading a project assessing the effect of Reindeer grazing in subarctic peatland. He is a member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters since 2016.
